Aromatherapy Tips
- Eucalyptus leaf oils are best known for their antiseptic and decongestant properties. They are often used in aromatherapy for alleviating the effects of colds, flu, catarrh and sinus conditions. In addition, they also seem to be reasonably effective in repelling insects.
- In menopause, one of the more frequent issues is the feeling of a loss of femininity. Rose essential oil is recommended by aromatherapists to help boost self-confidence and the feeling of femininity. Calcium supplements are also useful to maintain healthy bones.
Muscular aches and pains
- To ease muscular aches and pains that you get from overuse of your muscles, use analgesic and warming essential oils. Essential oils that fit this category include eucalyptus, ginger, sweet marjoram, and thyme
- Evening Primrose oil is rich in GlA (gamma linolenic acid). GLA is a “fatty acid” that is very important in regulating many of our body functions and is taken in from our diet.
The GLA of evening primrose oil is significant for our body systems as it has the ability to affect many of the enzyme activities in our body. Enzymes trigger many of the biochemical processes in our body including the lowering of blood pressure, regulating the production of saliva and tears, and also some of the hormones in females.
- Aromatherapists and skin specialists over the years have consistently recommended massage as a way of reducing the likelihood of stretch marks appearing. The massage oils and the massage itself are considered to increase the resilience of skin, making it less likely to have the deep tissue tears that lead to stretch marks.
A useful massage oil blend to improve the resilience of your skin takes 10 ml of wheatgerm oil, 10 ml of apricot kernal oil, 50 ml of sweet avocado oil, and then adding the following proportions of essential oils: neroli (5 drops), tangerine (20 drops) and lavender (5 drops). Store the blend in a clea- n bottle out of the light and use around 1 - 2 teaspoons to massage the areas of your skin that may potentially be impacted by stretch marks.
- If you have stretch marks, you can also help make them less prominent by improving the tone and resilience of the surrounding skin through the use of local massage with a blend using 50 mls of the above carrier oils with equal proportions of the essential oils (around 2-3 drops of each): geranium and lavender - and if you are feeling like spoiling yourself, 2 drops of frankincense. Remember to patch test if you have sensitive skin, and also check out the contraindications of each of the essential oils at The Natural Choice Store
- The best base oils for using with dry skins are avocado, wheatgerm, sweet almond, apricot kernal, evening primrose and jojoba. Essential oils that are used in aromatherapy to help stimulate the production of sebum include German and Roman chamomile, jasmin, neroli and rose. Others that are sometimes used include geranium lavender, rosewood and sandalwood.
A regular skin massage will help increase the circulation to the skin, which in turn should bring nourishment to the skin to improve its overall health.
- Oily skin tends to look shiny thick and firm, and the pores of the skin look enlarged, often due to oil trapped within the folicle. An oily complexion tends to have a neglected look, and may also have blemsihes on the forehead area.
Rather than using harsh sopas and strong astringents with a high alcohol content to remove the oil (both of which can actually stimulate the glands to produce more oil), use a clay mask and steam treatments to unblock the pores.
- Mentally tired?
When you have that exhausted feeling that comes from long periods of concentration, thre are some invigorating essential oils that can assist in "waking up" the body, stimulating the mind, and helping improve your concentration.
Essential oils such as basil, lemon, peppermint, rosemary, ginger, and lemongrass are all recommended - apply using an aromatherapy vaporizer or by inhalation. For inhalations, a drop or two on a handkerchief or a tissue can
- A simple mouthwash using peppermint and tea tree oils involves mixing 6 drops of both tea tree oil and 6 drops of peppermint oil with 10 fl oz (300 ml) of mineral oil. Mix in a sterilized bottle and shake well. Remember - do not swallow this mixture - it is a mouthwash.
Lavender oil is one of the most common essential oils used in aromatherapy to help relieve the problem of insomnia. One of my favorite essential oils for this purpose is sandalwood, because it provides a deep
- Scented aromatherapy candles can be created using your own essential oils.
Purchase a very fat candle, and if you can afford a beeswax candle then purchase that as they make a lovely present. To scent the candle, you light it, allow a few seconds for the wax to melt around the wick, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, blow out the candle. (Remember essential oils are highly flammable). When the candle is out, add a few drops of the essential oils you want to add.
This method allows you to change the mood of your candle's aroma from time to time, as the essential oils evaporate.
- The presence of cellulite seems to be best addressed with a combination of diet, massage, dry skin brushing (i.e. with a loofah) and exercise. Essential oils that are useful for a cellulite massage oil are cypress, rosemary and lemon peel. Prepare a blend of these three essential oils in the proportions of 7:3:5 drops respectively, and mix it thoroughly into approximately 1 fluid oz (two tablespoons) of a carrier oil, such as sesame seed oil. Another aromatherapy recipe for cellulite is blended in the following proportions: fennel (3 drops), cypress (5 drops) and grapefruit (5 drops). Mix it into a carrier oil as before.
Generally, it is beneficial for you to rotate these two blends, say on a weekly basis.
- Lavender oil, tea tree oil and manuka oil are used in different parts of the world as a way of alleviating the effect of insect bites and stings.
- Only use good quality vegetable oils as carrier oils for all your aromatherapy uses. Look for cold-pressed oils as these are the best because they retain more ot the vitamin and mineral content.
- Essential oils are useful for dealing with cold sores. Essential oils with antirviral properties include tea tree, manuka, bergamot, eucalyptus and melissa. Apply them locally as soon as the first sign of a cold sore appears

----------------------- As a continuation of our series on aromatherapy for animals, this article describes how to utilize essential oils safely and effectively for the health of your cat. For previous installations in this series, please review our article archive at http://www.aromalchemy.com/education/archives.html.
Many French aromathispists, including Nelly Grosjean, have researched and published their findings about how to safely use essential oils with animals. I have personally experienced great healing results using essential oils for my own cat, as well as with other animals.
Essential oils are not harmful for anyone as long as you know how and which ones to use. When using aromatherapy for your dog, cat or other animals, only use a minute amount of the recommended oils and do not use them directly on the skin.
For further information on using aromatherapy blends safely with your animals, please read: "Nelly Grosjean - Veterinarian Aromatherapy," available at both Amazon.com and BarnesAndNoble.com. -----------------------
Cats are inherintly instinctive, independent and agile creatures. They are notorius for chasing almost anything and eating mice, birds and other small animals. Cats also love roaming and playing, and often fight to protect their territory.
Urban cats and country cats are quite different. Country cats are generally tough while city kitties tend to show more weakness in their immune, pulmonary and digestive systems. Appropriate food choices according to their environment plays a major role in the well-being of diverse cats.
A third category, indoor cats, has specific needs as well. Indoor cats often live comfortably and don't have the opportunity to experience the fun and frolic of the outdoors. Owners of indoor cats should pay close attention to providing a healthy diet and playing with their feline friend as often as possible to help him get in touch with his natural state.
Here are few tips veterinarians often suggest to keep your dear friend healthy:
* Do not overfeed your cat with "people" food, such as milk, cheese, etc. Invest in a quality brand and pay close attention to the ingredients. Preferably go to a pet store to find the highest quality food.
* Do not feed your cat only canned food. Canned food alone causes fatigue and does not provide a sufficient amount of nutrients. Most vets will recommend a diet of both canned and dry food.
* If you own an outdoor cat, allow him or her to hunt. Cats truly enjoy this experience and it is an excellent source for exercise as well.
* Always provide your cat with lots of attention and love. Set aside time to play and cuddle with the special kitty in your life.
* Brush your cat once a week with a brush designed specially for your cat's size and fur type. This disperses the furs natural oil and creates shine.
* If your cat has dandruff be sure to shampoo him every few months with an unscented baby shampoo and/or visit a professional.
* If you own an indoor cat, be sure to manicure his claws on a regular basis.
* Mineral supplements are wonderful for cats. You can find cat-specific supplements in natural food or pet stores. Be sure to always follow the advice of your veterinarian.
* Keep your cat comfy with his own soft and warm "cat bed."
* For a healthful and lengthy life, always keep up with vaccinations.
The following holistic aromatherapy recipes will complete your cat's healthy living regime. Please note, you should NOT spray directly on the cat, but rather a bit on his bed or around the cat in order to create a fine mist. Just one time spray is enough. Be sure to follow the specific use instructions listed immediately after the ingredients for each blend.
******** Deter Household Fleas ******** 15 drops of Peppermint
Pour the essential oil into a 30 ml spritzer bottle filled with water. Spray the bed and all other infected areas.
* Use a special flea treatment recommended by your veterinary to treat your cat himself.
******** Control Cat Odor ******** -10 ml of Lemon -5ml of Lavender -5ml of Pine
Pour the essential oils into a 30 ml spritzer filled with water. Spray around the house regularly and on infected areas. This blend works especially well for urine odor.
******** Ease Coughs, Coriza, Typhus ******** -5 ml of Eucalyptus -5 ml of Pine -1 ml of Tea Tree
Pour the essential oils into a 30 ml spritzer filled with water. Gently spray your cat and then around the apartment or house. The therapeutic mist will help strengthen your cat's immune system, heal existing ailments and purify the air.
******** Combat Lethargy ******** -4 drops of Rosemary -5 drops of Lavender
Pour the essential oils into a 10 ml bottle and then add organic vegetable oil to fill. Anoint the spine of your cat and then pour a few drops into the palm of your hands. Place your hand under your cat's nose and allow him to breathe in the aroma.
